Are Your Skincare Habits Working Against You?

You cleanse, moisturize, and follow a routine — but your skin still breaks out or looks less than its best. Sound familiar? The problem often isn't what you're not doing, but what you're doing incorrectly. Here are seven of the most common skincare mistakes that quietly undermine your results.

Mistake 1: Over-Cleansing Your Face

Washing your face too frequently — or using a cleanser that's too harsh — strips away your skin's natural oils. Your skin responds by producing even more oil to compensate, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. Cleansing twice a day (morning and evening) with a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser is usually sufficient for most skin types.

Mistake 2: Skipping Sunscreen

UV damage is the leading cause of premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and barrier disruption. Skipping SPF — even on cloudy days or when working indoors near windows — allows cumulative damage to build up over time. UV rays penetrate glass. Make SPF 30+ a non-negotiable morning step, every single day.

Mistake 3: Using Too Many Active Ingredients at Once

Enthusiasm for skincare is great, but layering multiple potent actives (like retinol, AHAs, vitamin C, and benzoyl peroxide) without understanding how they interact can lead to irritation, redness, and a compromised barrier. Introduce new actives one at a time, and research which combinations work and which to avoid. For example:

  • Don't mix: Retinol + AHAs/BHAs in the same routine (can over-exfoliate)
  • Don't mix: Vitamin C + niacinamide in very high concentrations (can reduce effectiveness)
  • Do use: Hyaluronic acid with almost anything

Mistake 4: Not Changing Your Pillowcase Often Enough

Your pillowcase accumulates oil, dead skin cells, hair products, and bacteria every night. Sleeping on a dirty pillowcase repeatedly transfers all of that back onto your skin. Change your pillowcase at least once or twice a week — more often if you're acne-prone.

Mistake 5: Touching Your Face Throughout the Day

Your hands carry bacteria, oils, and environmental pollutants. Every time you rest your chin on your hand, rub your eyes, or pick at a blemish, you're transferring those to your skin. This is one of the most overlooked causes of recurring breakouts along the jawline and cheeks. Become more conscious of this habit — it makes a real difference.

Mistake 6: Applying Products in the Wrong Order

Skincare products should generally be applied from thinnest to thickest consistency. Applying a heavy cream before a lightweight serum prevents the active ingredients in the serum from penetrating the skin. The correct general order is:

  1. Cleanser
  2. Toner / essence
  3. Serum / treatment
  4. Eye cream
  5. Moisturizer
  6. Face oil (if using)
  7. Sunscreen (AM only)

Mistake 7: Exfoliating Too Often

Physical scrubs and chemical exfoliants (AHAs, BHAs) are valuable tools — but overusing them damages the skin's protective barrier. Signs you're over-exfoliating include stinging, tightness, increased sensitivity, and paradoxical breakouts. Most skin types do well with exfoliation 1–3 times per week maximum, not daily.

The Fix: Simplify and Be Consistent

The best skincare routine isn't the most complex one — it's the one you follow consistently and thoughtfully. When in doubt, scale back to the basics: cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF. Let your skin stabilize, then gradually reintroduce actives one by one. Your skin will tell you what it needs.
